Located in the east of the province of Málaga, about 45 km from Ronda in the Genal Valley, it is one of the towns that make up the Serranía de Ronda.
Its distinctive urban structure, inherited from the Arab settlers who founded the town, is terraced, adapting to the steep terrain that has been its home for hundreds of years. Its whitewashed houses adorned with works of art stand out against the green valley.
Every two years, the town council organizes the "Art Gatherings" of the Genal Valley (although during the initial years, 1994, 1995, and 1996, they were annual gatherings). These gatherings are highly successful due to the quality of the pieces on display and the number of participants. The pieces, permanently displayed in squares and streets, are turning the town into a veritable open-air museum. Already, around one hundred painters, sculptors, photographers, and ceramists have left their mark there.
The town council provides them with everything they need during the two-week gathering. In return, the work becomes part of the municipality's heritage and, depending on its materiality, is either exposed to the elements or transferred to the exhibition collection of the soon-to-be-inaugurated municipal museum. The result: streets and corners, squares and nooks, walls and rooftops of Genaguacil have transformed the town into an open-air museum.
